Biking Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone Park offers some of the most spectacular natural beauty in the country, and what better way to explore that natural beauty then on the seat of a bicycle. Biking in the Park is allowed on on all public roadways. Biking is not allowed on any off road trails except those listed below under Yellowstone Biking Trails.

Yellowstone Biking Regulations


  • Bicycle riders on public roadways in Yellowstone National Park must obey the same rules and regulations that apply to motorized vehicles.
  • Bicycles are not allowed on any park trails or in off-road backcountry areas. Service roads and utility corridors are closed to bikes unless use in expressly permitted.
  • Bicycles must exhibit a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the rear during periods of low visibility.
  • Riding bicycles abreast on a public roadway is prohibited.

Blacktail Plateau Drive

5 miles (one way) - easy     Elevation: 6942ft - 6690ft
Begins: 8 miles E of Mammoth – Ends: 2 miles NW of Tower-Roosevelt Junction
Roadway allowing 1-way vehicle traffic and 2-way biking. Starting about 8 miles E of Mammoth, rejoining the Grand Loop about 2 miles NW of Tower-Roosevelt Junction.


Bunsen Peak Road

6 miles (one way) - moderate     Elevation: 7336ft
Begins: Golden Gate area – Ends: Yak Camp Rd
Bunsen Peak Rd runs around Bunsen Peak, going from the Golden Gate pullout around the mountain, and joining the Grand Loop at Yak Camp Rd.


Fountain Freight (Fountain Flats) Road

5.5 miles (one way) - moderate     Elevation: 7201ft - 7303
Begins: 6 miles N of Old Faithful – Ends: 4.5 miles S of Madison Junction
Road off Grand Loop 4.5 miles S of Madison Junction to 6 miles N of Old Faithful, around back side of Grand Prismic Pool and Goose Lake.


Lone Star Geyser Road/Trail

2 miles (one way) - easy     Elevation: 7539ft
Begins: Kepler Cascades parking – Ends: Lone Star geyser
Trailhead just off Grand Loop about 3.5 miles SE of Old Faithful (at Kepler Cascades parking). Lone Star geyser erupts approximately every three hours, and is a crowd pleaser.


Natural Bridge Road

1 mile (one way) - easy     Elevation: 7785ft
Begins: Grand Loop near Bridge Bay – Ends: 1 mile up road
Old Natural Bridge Rd, near Bridge Bay off Yellowstone Lake.


Old Chittenden Service Road

2 miles (one way) - easy     Elevation: 7208ft - 6601ft
Begins: 4 miles S of Tower Fall – Ends: Tower Fall Campground
Old road running from Grand Loop about 4 miles S of Tower Fall to Tower Fall Campground.


Old Lakeshore Road

1 mile (one way) - easy     Elevation: 7782ft
Begins: by Lake Hotel – Ends: Grand Loop just S of Lake Junction
Old road bed running from Lake Hotel along lake shore, to rejoin the Grand Loop just S of Lake Junction.


Riverside Trail

1.4 miles (loop) - easy     Elevation: 6726ft
Begins: Trailhead just inside park gate – Ends: loop
Trailhead just past park gate. Two loop trails running alongside the Madison River. Summer months provide hiking and biking.
